CONOPS at Harmony Free Gold operations under threat
Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited (NYSE: HMY JSE: HAR) today announced that at a meeting held between Harmony management of the Free Gold Operations and representatives from the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) on 3 January 2005, the company was informed by NUM that the Union was not prepared to support an application for Sunday labour.
By not having the necessary union support, the company’s application to the Department of Minerals and Energy to work on Sunday’s is unlikely to be approved. CONOPS (continuous operations) working arrangements at these shafts can therefore not take place. Discussions between the parties continue.
CONOPS was introduced as one of the alternatives to redress the continued losses being incurred at the company’s marginal operations in the Free State which have been adversely affected by the current low R/kg gold price scenario.
