At the beginning of 2007, the organisers of the Comrades Marathon were advised that Harmony would not be renewing the sponsorship. Graham Briggs, acting Chief Executive of Harmony says, “The sponsorship is valued at R1,2 million a year and includes the 20 gold medals; ten for the top male finalists and ten for the top female finalists. Subsequent to our June quarter financial results, the company also decided to end its sponsorship to professional athletes.” This decision was based on the fact that the sponsorship had achieved its goal of profiling and raising the Harmony brand to new levels. In 2002, Harmony identified the Comrades sponsorship as an opportunity to create brand awareness amongst a wider target audience and at the same time, position our brand as being different, gutsy and resilient. As with many corporate brands, Harmony reviews its sponsorship strategy and partners on a regular basis to ensure its effectiveness and relevance towards building and enhancing the Harmony brand of tomorrow. Harmony believes that the Comrades sponsorship has delivered immense value in creating brand exposure on a national platform that encourages nation building through sport. Harmony is refocusing its exposure to regional areas of its operations to create a closer relationship between our brand, our employees and our communities. Harmony has long been known for its commitment to the wellbeing of staff members and workers. It is this core human value that will benefit from continued development through Harmony’s athletics department, under the strict guidance of former Iron Man and Comrades Marathon winner Nick Bester. Harmony will also continue to encourage the internal development of sport and fitness programmes for its own workers. In addition. Two Oceans and Comrades marathon veteran and Sports Development Manager at Harmony, Zithulele Sinqe currently runs a programme which accommodates, clothes and schools 15 athletes in a facility in Randfontein. “On the weekends, that number jumps to 25, with athletes coming in for training from other parts of the country. We run weekend camps and participants usually range in age from 15 to 19. At present, we have one aged 12 and another 13 and from time to time orphans with potential come to our facility and live there,” says Briggs. Six of the 15 residents competed in various world championships this year, which is an indication that Harmony’s efforts are paying off. Harmony also has 15 Sports & Recreation Officers at its various hostels. They recruit and train talent to compete in the annual National Inter-mine Championships. Facilities, sports gear and transport costs are all taken care of by the company. Also still sponsored every month will be Harmony’s eight athletics clubs, four cycling clubs and two canoe clubs. “Harmony contributes to the maintenance and managing of these clubs and this will continue”, says Briggs. He notes that Harmony’s core focus is on the health and wellbeing of its staff, accordingly facilities are constantly being upgraded to encourage a healthy lifestyle after shifts. “Our staff can choose from a wide variety of sports and recreational offerings, including soccer, rugby, running, tribal dancing, darts, netball and cycling. We also recently purchased 100 mountain bikes and will be running cycling clinics at the hostels.” Harmony is proud of its disabled Basketball team in Welkom, which competes with other teams around the country. “With our focus on employee development, all Harmony staff members who show potential in a specific sport will be encouraged to attend the various training camps we offer,” concludes Briggs.
