Thursday, 9 April 2009. Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited (Harmony) is pleased to announce that its Evander 2 & 5 Shafts, which form part of its Evander Operations in Mpumalanga, won the Safety Achievement Flag in the category Deep/Ultra Deep (deeper than 2000m) Gold/Platinum Mines Division, awarded by the Mine Health and Safety Council (MHSC) yesterday. The MHSC awards Safety Achievement Flags to the mining industry for recognition of successful participants. This specific flag was awarded to the gold or platinum mine in South Africa that has the highest improvement on the number of days lost due to accidents. “This achievement bares testimony to the dedication and attitudes of all the people working as a team on the mine,” says Malcolm Bentley, General Manager of Harmony’s Evander Operations. Graham Briggs, Harmony’s Chief Executive adds: “Evander’s team has shown that production can be achieved safely, and we are extremely proud of this achievement.” Going forward, Harmony will continue applying its recipe for success through participation of all stakeholders and the continued change in behaviour, with management leading from the front.
