Harmony’s Tshepong miners found
Johannesburg. Sunday, 26 April 2009. It is with deep regret and sadness that Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited announces that the two individuals who were trapped underground at its Tshepong mine in the Free State, died as a result of the fall of ground accident that occurred on 23 April 2009.
Rescue teams, assisted by the Tshepong stoping teams, worked since the time of the accident to search for the two employees. A second entry of access was found yesterday morning which expedited the search for the two men.
Harmony’s Chief Executive Officer, Graham Briggs says, “We are deeply saddened that our rescue efforts resulted in the recovery of the two bodies. Our teams, together with teams from other mines, worked around the clock to find the two employees and we remained optimistic that we would be able to rescue them. It is an emotional and trying time for all involved. Our heartfelt condolences are extended to the two men’s families, friends and colleagues.”
