Bambanani: body of one missing miner recovered; search for second
Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited announces with deep regret that a search and rescue team has recovered the body of one of the two employees missing since a seismically-induced rockfall at the East Shaft of the company’s Bambanani Mine near Welkom yesterday (Monday, 27 September 2010).
The search and rescue team reached and recovered the employee’s body at approximately 14:30 today. The search for the second missing employee continues.
Search and rescue teams are working in rotation around the clock, with each team comprising up to 15 members. The teams’ work is hampered both by the volume of fallen rock and restricted space. Progress is slow in order to ensure that risk to the search and rescue teams is minimised.
Of the six employees brought to surface soon after yesterday’s seismic event, three have been hospitalised. Of the three, one is in a critical but stable condition and the other two are in a satisfactory condition.
The names of all employees involved will be withheld until their next of kin have been informed.
