Harmony’s Executive Director, Mashego Mashego, hosted the delegation who explored a number of topics, which included: relationship enhancement between government and mining, PNG’s commitment to the Wafi-Golpu project, Harmony’s investment in PNG and infrastructure development (such as the development of roads and generating power). Those present from Harmony included the Company’s chairman: Patrice Motsepe, the chief executive officer, Graham Briggs and various other board members and management. Our visitors from PNG included Vice Minister of Public Investments and State Enterprises, Johnson Tuke, Secretary Department of Mineral Policy and Geohazard Management, Shadrach Himata, Executive Officer Department of Mineral Policy and Geohazard Management, Dennis Kosam, and Consultant John Tonar. Meetings were held with The South African Chamber of Mines and The Department of Mineral Resources. Visits included the Rand Refinery, an underground trip to Harmony’s operations in Welkom and we also shared Harmony’s local economic development programmes in the Free State, which included the Masimong Housing Project, The Sport Academy and the Virginia Jewellery School. Minister Chan said, “This visit reinforces the depth of Harmony’s relationship with PNG, which continues to strengthen through an innovative and collaborative mining business model and a cross-continental information exchange on mining and exploration. Harmony’s positive contribution to its communities, land rehabilitation after mine closures and its commitment to good healthcare systems for its employees are good examples of what will be applied in PNG. We look forward to strong, sustainable relations between PNG and South Africa, especially with Harmony.” Mashego Mashego, executive director of Harmony supported the view of the Minister, saying that: “This visit is viewed as a milestone in Harmony’s continued relationship with the people of Papua New Guinea. We are pleased to have hosted the Minister of Mining, Honourable Byron Chan and the delegation from PNG.
