Harmony creates entrepreneurs through several youth sponsorship programmes
Johannesburg: Thursday, 10 July 2014: Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited (“Harmony”) plays an essential role in advancing the work of youth programmes to improve lives, strengthen communities and develop socially responsible business leaders.
Harmony will be one of two platinum sponsors for the eight consecutive year at the 2014 Enactus South Africa National Competition, to be held on 10 and 11 July 2014. Enactus is a community of students, academic- and business leaders, who are committed to enabling young leaders through the transformative power of entrepreneurial action to shape a better, more sustainable world. Twenty two university teams will participate and showcase the impact of their community outreach projects to various business leaders, with Harmony executives being part of the judging panel.
Harmony also sponsors the South Africa Agency for Science and Technology (SAASTA) programme. The SAASTA initiative forms part of Harmony’s commitment to the sustainable socio-economic development and well-being of our mining communities. Harmony’s partnership is aimed at improving performance in sciences and mathematics through learner and teacher development in these communities.
SAASTA will award top achievers and schools in the 50th National Science Olympiad at an awards ceremony in Gauteng on 10 July 2014. This year over 30 000 learners from South Africa, Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Namibia participated in the Olympiad this year.
Through SAASTA and Enactus, entrepreneurs are created by steering the youth towards careers in science, technology, engineering and innovation. Harmony has contributed close to R14.6 million to the Enactus programme and R11.5 million towards the advancement of science and technology since 2009.
