Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited (‘Harmony’ and/or ‘the company’) provided a wide-ranging overview of its activities in Papua New Guinea (“PNG”) at the annual Papua New Guinea (PNG) Mining and Petroleum conference and exhibition hosted by the PNG Chamber of Mines and Petroleum Led by Harmony’s Southeast Asia operations executive, Gary Davies, the Harmony team highlighted Harmony’s achievements since entering the country in 2004 and affirmed Harmony’s ongoing commitment to mining meaningfully in Papua New Guinea (‘PNG’). In his address, Mr Davies provided an update on the present permitting phase of the Wafi-Golpu project, and reviewed Harmony’s plans for the further development of the Hidden Valley mine, including the recent extension of the term of its mining lease to 2030. Mr Davies emphasised the importance of safety and noted that the Hidden Valley mine currently operates at a leading industry total recordable injury frequency rate of 0.38, with five years’ fatality free and over three million fatality free shifts achieved in FY21. Hidden Valley mine has also contributed significantly in the fight against Covid-19, assisting the health authorities with vaccination drives and other community initiatives, while also establishing entry-point centres supported by local businesses to ensure the health and safety of its workforce. Harmony is an established partner in the development of PNG. With over 1,500 employees and over 500 contractors, it is estimated that the Hidden Valley mine contributes an annual average benefit to the PNG economy of approximately K632 million per year, while also supporting the community through a wide range of education, health, agriculture and community infrastructure programs. “We are confident that our South African and PNG track record and experience will enable us to deliver our growth objectives, working with all stakeholders for mutual benefit,” said Gary Davies, Executive General Manager- Operations, South East Asia.
