About Harmony ReConnect

In collaboration with the Department of Health’s Medical Bureau for Occupational Diseases (MBOD), Compensation Commissioner for Occupational Diseases (CCOD), Mineworkers Provident Fund and various compensation, social and retirement funds, we assist and guide mineworkers and/or their beneficiaries through the claims processes.

Harmony was also central in settlement negotiations and was actively involved in establishing the Tshiamiso Trust (www.tshiamisotrust.com) after the High Court approved the R5.2 billion settlement of the silicosis and TB class action lawsuit between gold mining companies, Harmony, Gold Fields, African Rainbow Minerals, Anglo American South Africa, AngloGold Ashanti, Sibanye-Stillwater and claimant attorneys for affected mineworkers.

The Tshiamiso Trust (Setswana for “to make good” or “to correct”), administers claims and payments to eligible claimants or their beneficiaries.

With industry support, Harmony developed the paperless Compensation Claims Management System (CCMS) to assist the MBOD, CCOD and the Tshiamiso Trust to facilitate the conclusion of lung disease claims.  CCMS has been operational at the Tshiamiso Trust from November 2020, and at the MBOD from July 2021. The CCMS has helped reduce the average claim processing time from 500 to 90 days at the MBOD.

Since inception in 2020, the Tshiamiso Trust has compensated a total of over 12 684 mineworkers to the value of R1.14 billion, of which 5 896 have service years at a historic Harmony-related operation. These former Harmony mineworkers received R526 million in compensation. During the same timeframe, the CCOD has compensated 4 900 former Harmony mineworkers to the value of R198 million.

During FY23, 3 343 former Harmony mineworkers were compensated by the Tshiamiso Trust to the value of R304 million, where the CCOD compensated R54 million to 1 169 former Harmony mineworkers.
